Stand the **** up!

Post by Mortox on Sun Sep 24, 2017 10:46 am

Millions of dollars are paid to NFL players who represent their respective states and home nation. This business of "taking a knee" is disrespectful and juvenile!

Honestly, if they desire to protest, they can do it on their own time!

It's hypocritical.  They are part of the 1% everyone looks at as privileged.  To claim bigotry is pathetic.

But the NFL has been going downhill for years now.  Hence why I no longer watch it.

Edit:  You will read in the media how the NFL is not suffering due to their political activity... then in a small corner, you will read something like this:

Not political at all!! Evil or Very Mad

Not only that, they are paid employees that represent a team (company) and there are much better places and times to protest.  If any of us did this at our job, we would more likely than not be shown the door.

I've never been into sports. Mike Vick was my wake up call to the appeal to authority fallacy. That is, a specialist excelling in one facet of society doesn't give them any credentials to speak on any other facet.

If Kaepernick were giving advice on how to kick a football, I'd listen. But, I wouldn't let him make me a sandwhich let alone tell me how to think or feel. Unless... I was seeking to understand better how it felt to be adopted, handed everything on a sliver platter, or reject everyone and everything that has improved the quality of my life only to run off to a third world country and pronounce people there who couldn't care less about me as my family because they all share a similar birth mark to me.

As is, those subjects are of no interest.

More interesting to me is watching the ground being lost to rival sports like soccer that would also use their sport as an instrument of cultural/political influence.

Free speech mothefoccas :-p
I guess I should include the disclaimer that because I am not American, I am not emotionally involved with your national symbols.

However, I do not see a problem. As David says, this is someone who is good at sports. It really is media that is blowing up the importance of his gesture... It really should be rather irrelevant.

Also, if refusing to stand to the national anthem is such a crime, then what can we say about people marching around with Nazi flags?

There is a clear distinction between legality and bad taste. Razz

I support those who are boycotting the NFL also, but that just goes to show that even freedoms aren't without consequence.

I like that about the US. Over here, if the President would've wanted the player out, he'd be out already.

The thing is, this has nothing to do with freedom of speech but is in fact a workplace violation.  The NFL has rules against this type of thing that they are ignoring to do this.  You can't just speak out while on duty.

Today another issue came up concerning this. Players, and even the spectators in Atlanta, who do not wish to cover their hearts during the anthem are being encouraged to lock arms "in solidarity".

The last time I checked, when you come up with an alternative to a previous act of solidarity to show a united disapproval of it - that's called a revolution.

David, exactly correct. This behaviour is juvenile and distasteful.

Take a knee is one of the more ignorant forms of protest I have witnessed, considering their protest is about drawing attention to police brutality against black people by white police officers. What does that have to do with the national anthem of The United States or the American flag?

Draw national (and international) attention to issues is always best done through actions that are distasteful. Controversy sells more papers than tasteful methods.

If the intent of the gesture was to grab attention, this "juvenile and distasteful" action was wildly successful. The problem I see now is... What do these people do now that they are in the spotlight? Clever tweet about systemic oppression as they retreat into their mansions?

A whole lot of people will retweet and repost and Facebook share and unleash hashtag hell... But do nothing more for this issue they are so supposedly vehement about. They will likely amount to nothing, their gestures are more about making themselves feel good about themselves, as if they actually did something.

It all reminds me of your post on the ineffectiveness of prayer, Mortox.

Like the 1%'er Whoopi Goldberg calling herself a slave scratch while her party turns in legislation with terms like "the rich". What does "the rich" even mean?

The people in my country have such a contorted view of the social classes (another marxist convention) that a vast chunk of working couples are "rich" and don't even know it.

If anyone wants to get real, give this one a think: http://www.amazon.com/Rediscovering-Americanism-Progressivism-Mark-Levin/dp/1476773084
